The Toronto Argonauts have released linebacker Wynton McManis, a two-time All-CFL selection and Grey Cup champion. Despite a productive year with 62 defensive tackles, four sacks, two interceptions, and one forced fumble, the team decided to part ways with the 31-year-old, who was the highest-paid player at his position in the CFL, earning $229,500 last year.
McManis, a Memphis, Tennessee native, joined the Argos in 2022, contributing to two Grey Cup victories. His family connection to Toronto, where his children were born, added a unique dimension to his journey with the team. Argonauts general manager Michael 'Pinball' Clemons expressed his gratitude for McManis' contributions, highlighting his impact both on and off the field.
'Wynton McManis fits the mold of players who leave an indelible mark on your life,' Clemons said. 'His journey with us was a testament to his dedication and leadership, and we are grateful for his contributions to our team and community.'
McManis' CFL career began with the Calgary Stampeders in 2017, where he won a Grey Cup. He later signed with the New Orleans Saints in the NFL, appearing in one regular-season game. In his CFL career, McManis has recorded impressive statistics, including 390 defensive tackles, 52 special teams tackles, 16 sacks, nine interceptions, four forced fumbles, and three defensive touchdowns in 100 regular-season games.
The Toronto Argonauts' 2025 season was marked by challenges, finishing third in the East Division with a 5-13 record and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019. The team's struggles were partly attributed to the absence of franchise quarterback Chad Kelly, who suffered a fractured leg in the East Final the previous year. Despite these setbacks, the Argonauts' leadership and fan base remain committed to building a stronger and more competitive team for the future.
