A dire warning: as measles spreads across South Carolina, a dangerous movement is gaining momentum, threatening to undermine our society's protection against preventable diseases.
In the midst of a measles outbreak that has affected nearly 1,000 individuals, groups with connections to the US health secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, are advocating for the removal of immunization requirements that safeguard our children.
Activists, fueled by misinformation and a disregard for scientific consensus, are targeting vaccine mandates in states battling to contain the spread of measles. The Guardian's investigation reveals a disturbing trend: anti-vaccine groups are organizing opposition to vaccine mandates in over 20 states, including those currently experiencing measles outbreaks.
Among the leaders of this campaign are Kennedy's former organization, a group run by his long-time publisher, and Leslie Manookian, an Idaho-based filmmaker, homeopath, and activist. These individuals claim that vaccine mandates violate personal freedom and the right to choose whether to participate in activities like school or work without immunization.
But here's where it gets controversial: they base their arguments on false or misleading information, exaggerating the risks of vaccines while downplaying the dangers of preventable diseases.
School immunization requirements are a critical tool in maintaining high vaccination rates and preventing the spread of infections like measles and pertussis (whooping cough). Research shows that communities with higher vaccine refusal rates have a higher risk of pertussis outbreaks, even affecting vaccinated children due to increased transmission.
Dr Jana Shaw, an infectious disease specialist, emphasizes the impact of individual choices on others: "It's not just about you. We have immunization laws because your choices affect those around you."
The Medical Freedom Act Coalition, a recently formed group, is pushing for changes to these laws. They advocate for legislation similar to Idaho's 2025 law, which prohibits medical mandates in various settings. The coalition, led by Manookian's Health Freedom Defense Fund and Stand for Health Freedom, opposes all medical mandates, arguing for the "basic human right" to decide what goes into our bodies.
However, their claims are contradicted by scientific evidence. Measles, for example, causes a range of symptoms, some mild, but complications are common and can be severe.
Despite the CDC's reports of over 1,100 measles cases in 2026 and hundreds of hospitalizations, Manookian and her allies downplay the severity of the outbreak, claiming it's being "hyped."
And this is the part most people miss: the consequences of removing vaccine mandates. Hafeezah Yates, from the pro-vaccine group South Carolina Families for Vaccines, warns of the potential overload on the medical system, disruption to children's education, and other long-term impacts.
New modeling from the Yale School of Public Health predicts a staggering $7.8 billion cost to the US by 2030, along with increased hospitalizations and deaths, if vaccination rates continue to decline.
