The Cincinnati Reds have officially signed Eugenio Suarez to a one-year Major League contract through the 2026 season, with a mutual option for 2027. This marks Suarez's second stint with the team, as he previously played for the Reds from 2015 to 2021, hitting 189 home runs with an .811 OPS across seven seasons. Suarez, a two-time National League All-Star, had a standout 2025 season, earning his second career All-Star selection after slashing .228/.298/.526 with a career-high-tying 49 homers and career-best 118 RBI across 159 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners. He was traded to Seattle on July 31, 2025, for first baseman Tyler Locklear, pitcher Hunter Cranton, and pitcher Juan Burgos.
Suarez's impressive performance continued in 2025, as he produced the 17th 4-homer game in MLB history as a member of the Diamondbacks on April 26 vs Atlanta. He finished the year ranked among Major League leaders in several offensive categories, including RBI (4th), home runs (5th), extra-base hits (77, 7th), total bases (309, T8th), and OPS (.526, 10th).
In addition to his success with the Diamondbacks, Suarez also set a new single-season Major League record for homers by both a National League third baseman and Venezuelan-born player with 49 in 2019, which were also tied for second-most by a Reds player in a season in franchise history. His 189 career homers with Cincinnati rank 13th in team history and were fourth-most by any National League batter from 2015 to 2021. Suarez, who received the Ernie Lombardi Award as the Reds' Most Valuable Player in both 2018 and '19, is the only primary third baseman in franchise history to produce three seasons with at least 30 home runs (2018, '19, '21).
The Reds also designated catcher Ben Rortvedt for assignment, who was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on November 12, 2025. This move brings the team's 40-player roster to capacity.
