Thomas Tuchel Signs New England Contract: 2028 Extension & Man United Snub (2026)

In a move that’s sure to shake up the football world, Thomas Tuchel is poised to commit his future to England until 2028, potentially signing a new contract as early as today. This decision deals a significant blow to Manchester United’s ongoing search for a new manager, leaving them back at square one. But here’s where it gets controversial: while Tuchel’s decision to stay with the Three Lions is a massive win for England fans, it raises questions about whether he’s truly settled or if the allure of club football could still tempt him in the future.

The Football Association (FA) is expected to confirm this morning that Tuchel has agreed to extend his tenure as England’s head coach until 2028, securing his role beyond the upcoming World Cup. The German’s current contract was set to expire after the tournament, but the FA has moved swiftly following England’s impressive qualifying campaign and growing fears that Tuchel might be a top candidate for the Manchester United job at season’s end.

Tuchel is reportedly thrilled at the prospect of leading England not only in the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, but also in the 2028 European Championship, which will be held on ‘home soil’ across England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Wembley Stadium is set to host the semi-finals and final, adding an extra layer of excitement for the nation.

The deal, first reported by The Times, ensures Tuchel remains at the helm of the Three Lions until the end of the 2028 Euros. This comes after Manchester United had previously approached Tuchel, 52, about taking over at Old Trafford. In the summer of 2024, he was in talks to replace Erik ten Hag, even meeting with Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Although Tuchel ruled himself out at the time, he has remained a favorite among United’s hierarchy. Currently, Michael Carrick is in interim charge following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

And this is the part most people miss: while United’s managerial search continues, other top clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid are also in the market for new bosses, making Tuchel’s decision to stay with England even more significant.

Back in November, Tuchel hinted at the possibility of an extended stay, revealing how the England job had revitalized him. ‘I know from my years in professional and club football what makes me happy and brings out my best,’ he said. ‘I feel re-energized working with these players and being close to the Premier League. I also appreciate the level of support and trust I’ve received.’

Tuchel is set to attend this evening’s Nations League draw in Brussels, where he’s expected to address the media about his new deal. England, placed in pot three alongside Serbia, Belgium, and Norway, will face one of Portugal, France, Spain, or Germany in the group stage.

The Three Lions’ next fixtures include friendlies against Uruguay and Japan next month, followed by two World Cup warm-up games against New Zealand and Costa Rica. Their tournament campaign kicks off on June 17 against Croatia in Dallas.

But here’s the burning question: Is Tuchel’s commitment to England a definitive end to his club management ambitions, or could a lucrative offer from a top club still turn his head? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below—this is one debate that’s sure to divide opinions!
