Van Mathias: The Next Breakout Breaststroker in the USA? (2026)

The Rise of Van Mathias: A Unique Breaststroke Journey

In the world of U.S. breaststroke, a name that has captured attention is Van Mathias, an individual who, surprisingly, doesn't primarily identify as an athlete. Mathias, the Director of Operations for Indiana Swimming, has been making waves and setting impressive times in the pool, despite his unconventional path.

Mathias' recent achievements include a pair of best times in long course, clocking in at 26.57 seconds in the 50-meter breast and 59.45 seconds in the 100-meter breast. But here's where it gets interesting: he then dominated the yards rankings with swims of 49.93 and 49.54, placing him among the all-time greats in this discipline. However, his journey to the top hasn't been straightforward.

Breaststroke wasn't Mathias' forte during his junior years, nor was it his focus during his initial years in the NCAA. He even finished second to Luca Urlando in the 200 fly at the Junior Pan Pacs in 2018, and his college career saw him as a fly swimmer transitioning into IM events. This is a significant shift from the highly specialized world of elite breaststroke.

But could his background in butterfly actually be an advantage? After all, butterfly evolved from breaststroke, so it's not a stretch to imagine that fly swimmers could easily transition to breaststroke. However, the reality is that very few elite swimmers have successfully made this crossover. Breaststroke remains the most specialized stroke, and successful conversions are rare.

Among the top 50 swimmers in the 200-meter breast over the last three years, only three swim another stroke at a high level in long course: Daiya Seto, Kosuke Makino, and Leon Marchand, all medley swimmers. The 100-meter breast top 50 list reveals a slightly different picture, with Jiajun Sun, an elite short course 50 fly swimmer, Michael Andrew, who also crosses over between fly and breast, and Mathias himself, who is a top-40 swimmer in both the 100 breast and 50 fly.

Mathias' initial breakthrough came in short course yards, where he finished second in the 100 breast at the 2023 NCAA Championships. After a two-year break from competing, he became Indiana's Swimming Director of Operations. It was after the U.S. National Championships in 2025 that Mathias and the Indiana coaching staff saw an opportunity for him to become one of the nation's best.

Eight weeks later, at the U.S. Summer Championships, Mathias made his first senior National team with a 26.76 in the 50 breast, becoming the fastest U.S. man in 2025. His fly skills haven't faded either; he clocked a 23.06 in the 50 fly recently and has an impressive 50 free time. Mathias' breaststroke prowess has been evident for years, but his recent focus on the stroke has led to a meteoric rise.

His decision to switch up his event lineup, moving away from the 100 fly/200 fly/200 IM combination, and focusing on the 50 free/100 free/100 breast, paid off. He achieved three top-two finishes and his first individual conference title at the Big Tens, followed by becoming a three-time individual All-American in Minneapolis.

Mathias' improvements in yards didn't immediately translate to long course meters, but last summer saw a significant breakthrough. Since then, he has climbed the global and U.S. rankings in both meters and yards. In just seven months, he has shaved almost two seconds off his 100 breast time, and his 50 breast time has improved at an even faster pace.

His progress is almost tangible; in the long course 100, he's dropping nearly a hundredth of a second per day. And this is the part most people miss: his 50-meter time has been improving at an even faster rate.

Mathias is expected to continue his impressive progression in both the 50 and 100-meter breast events, even though U.S. Nationals won't be used for selecting international teams this summer. His journey is a testament to the power of specialization and the potential for athletes to excel in unexpected ways.

So, what do you think? Is Van Mathias the next big thing in U.S. breaststroke? Will his unique background in butterfly give him an edge, or is breaststroke too specialized for such a transition? Let's discuss in the comments!
